Celebrating grandparenting
November 22, 2009 – More than 5,000 people took part in the Grandparents’ Day celebration over the weekend, which included a 1.7km brisk-walk from the Chinese Gardens to the Science Centre Singapore. The event was organised by the Council for Third Age (C3A). Former Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of Singapore Press Holdings, Dr Tony Tan (below), walked the course with his two grandsons. Following the walk was a carnival at the Science Centre Singapore with live stage performances, games and contests, as well as free entry into the Centre. Several interest groups also came up with competitions to promote intergenerational bonding like the students from Raffles Institute.
Said Gerard Ee, chairman of C3A, “Grandparents play a very significant role in society and within families, sometimes even assuming the role of parents for the second time. It is important that we stop and truly express our appreciation for them. Many of them look after the grandkids, tutor them in schoolwork, and most importantly, act as links in passing on traditions, culture and good moral values.” Dr Tan also added that Grandparents’ Day is a great opportunity in getting families together, especially that nowadays families have become more dispersed. “It is not necessary to regard older people as a liability. They can be a great asset to Singapore. They srengthen the structure of our society. They are a help to their children and they provide love and guidance to their grandchildren. We should embrace this ageing society. It is a wonderful opportunity for Singapore,” he said.
