Hip fractures in Asia
October 22, 2009 – Startling numbers in terms of hip fractures in Asia. The incidence, which is often due to osteoporosis, has risen two to three fold in Asia during the past 30 years. This means it will be a major health challenge, according to an article in “Today” newspaper. In Singapore, the incidence of hip fracture in 1998 was five times of that observed in the 1960s. What is worse is that by 2050, more than 50% of osteoporotic fractures will occur in Asia, according to a new landmark report, “The Asian Audit, Epidemiology, Costs and Burden of Osteoporosis in Asia 2009”, published by the International Osteoporosis Foundation. The report noted that in Asia, osteoporosis “is greatly under-diagnosed and under-treated” although Governments are now recognising it is a major health problem. So how do you prevent osteoporosis? Physical activity such as weight-bearing exercises (walking, running, dancing, etc) and strength training can help you improve and maintain your bone mass. And don’t forget your calcium, vitamin D and a good amount of fruits and vegetables as nutrients from these can help build good bone health.
