Ghim Moh residents can now enjoy a new, purpose-built recreational facility where those from all ages, including with special needs, can spend quality time together. The new SMRT Ghim Moh Inclusive Playground, which was sponsored by transport operator SMRT, is the third such inclusive playground (there is one at Canberra Park and another at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, which were both launched last year) but the first to feature senior-friendly exercise equipment together with play facilities for children with special needs.

The SMRT Ghim Moh Inclusive Playground supports a broader push by the Government for residents to lead a healthy lifestyle and for better community integration through leisure and physical activities. The playground has specially-designed equipment for children with special needs, such as a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round, and is designed with fitness features that are also senior-friendly, even for those in wheelchairs, thus making it conducive for play and interaction for multi-generational families and communities. The playground’s fitness equipment allows seniors to do cycling exercises, shoulder strengthening exercises, and upper and lower body strength exercises.

The playground is also designed to break down the barriers of play between children with and without special needs, allowing them to play together with their friends and families, and encouraging development of their social and physical skills.

Lee Ling Wee, managing director of SMRT Trains, said: “The SMRT Ghim Moh Inclusive Playground is strategically located in the vicinity of several Special Education Schools, and we hope this new facility will bring significant benefits to the Ghim Moh community.”

He added: “With the exercise stations for the elderly as part of the playground offering, the entire playground provides opportunities for families across three generations to develop strong bonds and stay fit, through play and exercise. SMRT is pleased to be given this opportunity to give back to the community as part of our broader vision of ‘moving people, enhancing lives’.”
