More than 500 million people globally suffer from presbyopia, a condition that often goes unnoticed and uncorrected. By 2020, an estimated 714 million people worldwide over the age of 65 could have this condition.

Presbyopia is a natural change in vision that affects everyone, and most show signs when they are in their 40s. Over time, our eyes naturally harden which reduces the flexibility of the lens, and makes it difficult to adapt and change focus quickly from near to far and vice versa. It can then disrupt our daily activities such as not being able to read the menu as well in a low-lit restaurant or struggling to read alerts on our smart devices. And people are more active and they don’t want their vision to slow them down.

There are various correction options available in the market. The most basic option is to use reading glasses but they only correct vision up to a short distance away of 40cm, which then necessities a second pair of glasses for distance viewing. With all this in mind, ophthalmic optics company Essilor has launched three progressive lenses under the Varilux brand, where all pairs of the lenses are customised to the wearer’s optical and facial profile:

1) Varilux Physio – offers sharp and natural vision no matter the distance or lighting condition, and the ability to easily change focus from something near to another at a distance. It features the W.A.V.E 2.0 technology, which reduces the lens distortion by controlling the light that passes through the pupils, and the Binocular Booster technology, which takes into consideration the prescriptions of both eyes so the synergy of vision is maintained for instant focusing. It is ideal for those who are active, read frequently and are on the computers.

The new Varilux progressive lenses push the limits of technology to provide effortless vision every day.

2) Varilux Comfort – offers sharp and natural vision no matter the distance or lighting condition. It also features the W.A.V.E 2.0 technology.

3) Varilux Liberty – this is considered an entry-level progressive lens which offers effortless, sharp vision and features the Path Optimizer lens technology, which allows for a precise and optimal viewing path from far to near, and everything in between.

The progressive lenses are available at all leading optical shops and the public can go to selected Varilux Experience Authorised Dealers*, which there are over 70, to have a free first-hand experience virtually through the Varilux Experience system and allows them to “try” the new Varilux lenses to see if they work. A pair of Varilux Liberty lenses costs S$300, Varilux Comfort costs S$420, and Varilux Physio costs S$540.
